The Iconic Verulam Market

Verulam is a town that operates because of the hard work of its people. The town has a long history and is said to have been established roughly 167 years ago. The market in the town has been a lifeblood for the population for a number of these years. It's a place that attracts people from all over the province. Most notably to buy fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. This isn’t all the market has on offer, however, this is how it all started, many years prior.

Around the end of 1884 the then Verulam Town Board decided that they would implement 12 stalls for the purpose of selling fresh produce and today its turned into a thriving daily routine and a bread basket to many people living in and around Verulam

The market has attracted such widespread interest that people from other parts of KwaZulu Natal make the commute a few times a week or even daily. Whether its foodies, restaurateurs or even just your simple vegetarian. People from all walks of life love to frequent Verulam for the purpose of visiting this iconic market which is situated in a gateway town to the rest of the famed North Coast.

One such individual who makes the commute from Morningside in Durban to Verulam once a week is Rodney Hudson a food technologist who has been residing in the greater Durban area for roughly 30 years. Hudson runs a company which focuses predominantly on small-batch artisan Thai products such as sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, sriracha sauce and various types of curry pastes. Hudson travels to various markets around the city expanse searching for the perfect chili and he believes that Verulam has some of the best.

“Once or twice a week I take regular trips to various markets around Durban looking for the best ingredients for my artisan range of Thai products, and I always find Verulam to have the goods. It's a vibrant experience and makes getting up around 4am and the 30-minute drive worthwhile”. - says Hudson.

He goes on to describe how he needs a large quantity of the variety of birds eye chilies to make a certain kinds of authentic Thai sauces and the Verulam market is one of the only places in the greater Durban expanse where he can find a large enough quantity of chilies to produce the product.

Another feature that has made the town popular within the Hindu religion is an iconic temple by the name of Sri Gopalall Hindu Temple which was opened in the year 1913 by another iconic cultural figure who spent many years living in the KwaZulu-Natal province. This political icon was none other than Mahatma Gandhi.

However, the market and the temple isn’t all the town is famous for and its proximity to the other worthwhile North Coast destinations is another aspect that makes residents enjoy the place. Leading property company Century 21 also have a vested interest in the location. They have 9 properties available in the suburb which all range in price and size to suit anyone’s tastes and requirements.
