If you've resolved to quit nicotine, congratulations. You're on a path to a longer, healthier life. While freeing yourself from your habit is an uphill battle, there's hope on the horizon. A new study says living in a green neighbourhood may be the key to tossing out your cigarettes for good.
About the study
Research has found that people are less likely to smoke and more likely to successfully quit if they live in green neighbourhoods. Psychologists from the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, and the University of Vienna used data gathered through the Health Survey for England (HSE). They examined the responses of more than 8,000 adults to questions about their health, where they lived, and various other lifestyle factors.
The researchers discovered that people living in areas with a high proportion of green space were 20% less likely to be current smokers than those in less green areas. They also learnt that people who had smoked at some point during their lives, those living in greener neighbourhoods, were up to 12% more likely to have successfully quit smoking.
The study follows previous research touching on the restorative ability of green spaces. These spaces have the potential to reduce cravings for alcohol, cigarettes, and unhealthy foods. People who visit natural spaces enjoy improved physical and mental wellbeing. The way green spaces reduce stress is believed to be part of the reason for the lower smoking rates.
