A Bit of History
South Africa's second oldest town after Cape Town was founded in 1679 and named after Governor Simon van der Stel. The town quickly grew and became an important hub for trade and agriculture. The town also became known as the "City of Oaks" due to the large number of trees planted in the town. Stellenbosch is also well known for its restored Cape Dutch architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also home to Stellenbosch University one of the oldest and most prestigious tertiary education centres in Africa. Stellenbosch boast several wine estates, including Spier, Blaauwklippen, Boschendal, Tokara and of course our legendary golfer Ernie Else wine farm. Stellenbosch has something for everyone with its wine country setting, picturesque architecture, and diverse population.
Let's talk some Stellenbosch wines
When it comes to the wine industry the name "Stellenbosch" is practically the home of wine. The town boasts not only the oldest and arguably the most famous wine route in the country but also one of the world's most cutting-edge innovative wineries and the only viticultural and oenological department at a university.
Schools
The town is home to the University of Stellenbosch and other schools such as Paul Roos Gymnasium, Rhenish Girls' High School, and Bloemhof High School. Stellenbosch has 27 schools all suburbs and townships.
Shopping/Malls
Because Stellenbosch is such a unique and vibrant place surrounded by wine routes, the first thing people shop is wine at the wine farms, fynbos shrub and beauty products, but one has to eat too and Stellenbosch has plenty of nice shopping centres such as Eikestad Mall, Stellenbosch Square
Attractions
This historical town has apart from Museums, Wine estates, Markets, restaurants and a vibrant street café social culture several other attractions absolutely worth your while to explore. The town's historic centre is home to various typically white colonial-style buildings, and the surrounding countryside offers tranquil scenic hiking and biking trails. In addition, it is also home to several museums, art galleries, and live music venues where family and friends gather to enjoy the outdoors and beautiful nature surroundings. The town is also home to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve tucked away in the Valley of Jonkershoek. Hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the valley, past waterfalls, and gushing streams.
Restaurants
Most of the wine farms have their own restaurants where you can enjoy a wide variety of food to choose from however there are also several other excellent restaurants in town that serve everything from traditional Cape Malay dishes to international cuisine, or simply a scrumptious steak at the Fat Butcher, ensuring that you will never run out of new favourites to try!
Let's talk investment in Stellenbosch.
No matter what day of the week it is, every morning especially during the academic year, it's nearly impossible to find a parking space in Stellenbosch. The closer one gets to campus, the more improbable the likelihood - a testimony to the vast growing volume of students studying and living in this historical landmark town. Because there will always be students in Stellenbosch the investment property market has proven to show a stable and continuous steady growth with the lowest risk. Although it might be somewhat of an inconvenience it's one of the major driving forces behind the local economy in Stellenbosch. This in turn has a knock-on effect for the property market making it the ideal market to invest money in property which will yield considerable return in the future.
