Sasolburg

The town of Sasolburg is situated in the northernmost parts of the Free State province and is well known for the fact that it was the birthplace of the South African chemical company Sasol. Even though in 2019 the company's head office is now based in Sandton, the mega brand still invests funds into the area in various ways. One of them being the sponsorship of an Olympic sized swimming pool. 

A brief history of the area

There are very few towns in existence which were formed in the way that Sasolburg 
Was formed. Around the year 1954, the town was born for the very practical reasons for providing adequate lodging for employees of Sasol and also as a base for other operational equipment for the company. Sasol as a company was established due to trade embargos placed on the Apartheid government where the ruling party of the time had to think of alternative ways of producing energy.

Infrastructure in the town of Sasolburg is generally well maintained due to various initiatives by stakeholders and the local municipality in the region. Public transport in Sasolburg is limited to minivan taxis or buses where residents will often opt to use private transportation or metered taxis. There is no airport in Sasolburg if one wishes to travel by air the closest airport is the Vereeniging. If one wishes to travel from Sasolburg to the Vereeniging airport its said to be just over 30 km in distance and will take roughly 30 minutes travel time to get there. However, most of the longer domestic and international flights will take place from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. If one wishes to travel from Sasolburg to the OR Tambo International Airport it will be just over or just under 100 km depending on which route is chosen and will take just over an hour in travel time.

There one can enjoy views of various types of birds, an assortment of wild animals and plants and flowers which are indigenous to the region. A lovely outing for the whole family. The area was established around the year 1965. 

Koppies Dam Nature Reserve

This is deemed to be an ideal spot for any aspiring or serious fisherman out there. It's stated that the water in this particular dam and nature reserve is particularly clear, hence it makes for a perfect place to take the whole family over the weekend. Some of the fish found in the dam include yellowfish, mudfish, carp and barbell.
